Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

At Sereno Therapy, we provide comprehensive support for individuals struggling with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

OCD is a mental health condition characterised by recurring, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) that individuals feel driven to perform.

These obsessions and compulsions can significantly interfere with daily life, causing distress and impairing functioning.

Additionally, there is a subtype of OCD referred to as ‘Pure O,’ where the obsessions are present but the compulsions may be subtle or non-existent.

Common Symptoms of OCD

  • Obsessions: Persistent, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause anxiety or distress. Common obsessions include fears of contamination, doubts about safety, aggressive impulses, and sexual thoughts or urges that may be unwanted or inappropriate in nature. These obsessions can lead to intense anxiety and discomfort, compelling individuals to engage in compulsive behaviours to alleviate their distress.
  • Compulsions: Repetitive behaviours or mental acts that individuals feel compelled to perform in response to obsessions. Compulsions are aimed at reducing anxiety or preventing a feared outcome. Examples include excessive hand washing, checking, or mental rituals. These rituals provide temporary relief but often perpetuate the cycle of obsession and compulsion.
  • Avoidance: Individuals may avoid situations, places, or people that trigger their obsessions or compulsions. This avoidance behaviour can lead to social isolation, difficulties at work or school, and overall impairment in functioning. Avoidance may provide temporary relief but ultimately reinforces the belief that the feared situation is dangerous or harmful.
  • Anxiety and Stress: OCD is typically accompanied by high levels of anxiety and stress, as individuals experience persistent intrusive thoughts and the need to perform compulsive rituals. The constant cycle of obsession and compulsion can lead to chronic stress, impacting mental and physical well-being.
  • Distress and Impairment: OCD can cause significant distress and interfere with daily functioning, affecting relationships, work, and overall quality of life. The distress caused by obsessions and compulsions can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of shame, guilt, and inadequacy.

Our Approach to Treatment:

At Sereno Therapy, our highly experienced therapists specialise in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), two evidence-based modalities proven to effectively treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Our approach to treating OCD with CBT is based on well-established methods, tailored to your unique experience.

We begin by exploring the significance of the intrusive thoughts and their connection to distress.

Using sophisticated techniques such as Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), cognitive restructuring, and behavioural experiments, we support you in breaking free from the constraints of OCD, helping you regain control and live with greater ease

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is another therapeutic approach offered at Sereno Therapy, particularly beneficial for individuals with OCD who have experienced trauma or adverse life events contributing to their symptoms, as well as for treatment-resistant OCD. Through guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps clients reprocess memories linked to their OCD, reducing their emotional impact and alleviating symptoms.
