Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania (TTM) is a form of Anxiety characterised by an intense urge to pull out ones hair, typically accompanied by regular hair pulling. People with TTM often experience a sense of discomfort or unease prior to pulling and typically have feelings of relief, guilt or regret after pulling. TTM can be targeted to hair in specific areas of the body, such as eye lashes, eye brows or scalp (amongst others), and often results in people spending large amounts of their day checking these areas in a mirror accompanied by episodes of targeted hair pulling.

  • Discomfort / unease
  • Sense of something not being ‘right’ or ‘in order’
  • Urges to pull hair
  • Avoidance of mirrors / reflective surfaces
  • Spending long periods of time checking hair in mirrors
  • Repetitive hair pulling
  • Avoidance of photos / videos of oneself
